Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) are widely used in disinfection and sanitation because they are effective against algae, bacteria and fungi.
The major advantages of using FeF Chemicals Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) as disinfectants are (in use solutions):
- Non-toxic
- Non-irritating
- Non-bleaching
- Non-volatile
Disinfection and sanitation formulations are often referred to as biocides or biocidal.
Disinfection can simply be defined as a treatment to destroy harmful microorganisms or cleansing. Sanitation refers normally to cleaning and disinfection of lavatories, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) can be used to both disinfect and sanitize, as they act against bacteria causing sour smell, mildew etc. Besides the conventional products such as Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC / BAK / BAC) and Cetrimide, FeF supplies Myristalkonium Chloride (MKC) and Strong Cetrimide Solution, which can be used as disinfectants.
The term biocide covers a wide range of products and applications where a biocidal product, either biological or chemical, is generally used to destroy, prevent the growth of, or otherwise exert a controlling effect on any harmful organism.
In the European Union, biocidal products are regulated under a specific directive called European Biocidal Products Directive 98/8/EC (1). If you wish to find out more about regulation of biocides/biocidal products in EU, please click on the following link:
