Quats as Excipients for Cosmetics and Personal Care Products

Cosmetics and emulsions can be preserved using Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats).

In cosmetics and personal care preparations, the water content, oil phases, certain ingredients and the level of some surfactants can favour the growth of microorganisms and the consequent spoilage of the formulation.

Emulsions and gels used in cosmetics and personal care can be preserved using Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)Emulsions and gels used in cosmetics and personal care products can be preserved using Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) such as

- Cetalkonium Chloride (CKC),
- Myristalkonium Chloride (MKC),
- Stearalkonium Chloride (SKC) and
- Cetrimide

Other quats such as Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC) can be used as well, depending on the formulation.
