Information about REACH

European Union FlagInformation about the impact of the new European chemical legislation REACH on FeF Chemicals' Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats).

About REACH Directive

On June 1st, 2007, the European Commission adopted a new EU regulatory framework for chemicals (Directive 2006/121/EC and Regulation No. 1907/2006). Under the new system called REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), enterprises that manufacture or import more than one tonne of a chemical substance per year are required to register it in a central database.

The aims of the REACH Regulation are to improve the protection of human health and the environment while maintaining the competitiveness and enhancing the innovative capability of the EU chemicals industry. REACH gives furthermore greater responsibility to the industry to manage the risks from chemicals and to provide safety information on the substances. This information is being passed down the chain of production.

Transitional periods will be granted under REACH, in order to perform comprehensive registration tasks. Depending on substance volumes and certain health and environmental classifications, these transitional periods range from 3.5 to 11 years (Article 23). To be able to benefit from these transitional periods, manufacturers/importers must pre-register a substance. Substances will have to be pre-registered from June 1st to November 30th, 2008.
